In the Department of Economics, we strive to provide the highest level of graduate and undergraduate education while pursuing research on the frontier of applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and economic theory. The Department of Economics offers BA, BS, MA, and PhD degrees and an undergraduate minor in economics. The BA and the minor provide undergraduates with comprehensive exposure to the principles and tools of economics. BS degrees with specializations in economic analysis, financial economics, and economic policy analysis offer more focused curricula for undergraduates planning advanced study or careers in economics, financial analysis, or government. We offer approximately 60 undergraduate courses annually to about 600 majors and hundreds of non-majors. And our research activities not only increasingly overlap with one another but also increasingly involve our graduate and undergraduate students as graduate reading and lunch groups have flourished and an increasing number of research-focused undergraduate seminars are offered. The last four years have seen the emergence of the EcoTeach Center that has become the primary resource for Duke undergraduate and graduate students in economics. It has overseen the implementation of a large undergraduate program reform that emphasizes deeper understanding of core economics material in preparation for advanced course work, and it has spearheaded the process of developing innovative uses of instructional technology. And, since last year, EcoTeach has been the home of the annual AEA Summer Program aimed at assisting students, especially those from traditionally underrepresented minority groups, in their transition from undergraduate work to Economics PhD programs. It offers an undergraduate major and minor, a special four year BA/MA, and a renowned PhD program.
